My First Knight in Shining Armor

My first Knight in Shining Armor rode away this noon.

My  first Knight in Shining Armor did not wear armor, or ride a great white steed.                  His shine came from the buckles on his signature overalls,                                                    And the fascinating things in all the pockets,                                                                             An instant kid magnet.

My  first Knight in Shining Armor did not slay a mythical dragon,

His heroism came in all the things he helped me build and lift and tote,

In never thinking the job was too big, or too hard,

Or that it was a dumb idea.

My first Knight in Shining Armor never had a seat at the round table,

but sat around my table and shared stories and songs,

loved each thing I sat in front of him better than the last,

and left after a big hug and thank you.

My first Knight in Shining Armor could never afford expensive gifts,

but our love of detail and wee things kept his eye open,

To tiny jars, beautiful stones, flowers, dibs and dabs,

That made me smile.

My first Knight in Shining Armor wasn’t  known for being timely,

He operated in a different time zone it seemed.

But I was timely, due the special calendar I received each year,

Every name of the people we loved in their right place.

My first Knight in Shining Armor valued perfection,

And each of my children and, in turn,  their children,

Were thought to be perfect.

How can any Mom or Gramerly not appreciate that?

My first Knight in Shining Armor did not whisk me away to exotic places,

But shared a love with me of a place close to our hearts,

Where a breeze and sweet wood sprite skipping rocks was the peace we craved,

In a  little bit of a wondrous creek.

My first Knight in Shining Armor did not mind sharing good finds,

Like another Red Haired Knight, equally shiny, in such different ways,

But surrendered that close friend to his sister’s care.

She’s no fool. She married that good Knight.

My first Knight in Shining Armor will not leave a material legacy,

But something far greater- sweet young men I also love,

Jameson and Jacob, his crown jewels and greatest joy.

A joy to me as well.

My first Knight in Shining Armor will live in my heart,

and will shine there all of my days,

A friend, a confidant, a helper, a builder, a keeper,

My brother.
